The April unemployment rate for the Reno-Sparks area is reported at 11% compared with 5.6% a year earlier and is not predicted to return to a full recovery until after 2014. The recovery for much of the U.S. is expected to take many years, with some localities recovering much sooner.
Some of the energy producing areas, such as parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and the Louisiana coastal areas, are expected to recover later this year according to projections from IHS Global Insight, a leading economic forecaster. The Washington DC area is expected to follow by 2011, probably due to the massively expanded government sector.
The Census Bureau defines 363 U.S. metropolitan areas, or population centers. The IHS analysis covers 325 of these 363 areas. The remaining 38 were not included because of insufficient government data.
